When to renew your makeup Katy Taurel

When to renew your beauty products ?

Your Makeup Bag

When the beauty products that usually worked wonderfully, stop working for you a big factor to take into account is the expiration.  Most beauty products don’t have a definite expiration date they do have a lifespan and changes in their quality.

The 7th amendment cosmetic directive seal will indicate the recommended amount of months within which a product could be used after first opening it, provided it’s stored under normal conditions and not exposed to extreme temperatures.  For example, (24M) means that you should replace this product within (24 months) after the first opening. The time will vary depending on the type of product, products for the eyes tend to have a shorter lifespan than other products because of the sensitivity of the area. In high-quality brands, the products that do not have a 7th amendment seal would mean that they don’t have an explicit expiration time.

Eyeliner and Mascara: Eye products are very sensitive, from the moment you open them, they will last up to 6 months. Mascara that’s used daily should be renewed every two months. In any case, if your eyeliner or mascara start feeling dull in the eyes, harder to remove than normal or even just feel dryer, it´s time to buy a new one.

Skincare, Primers, Concealers and Foundations are normally products that last a bit longer; they could last up to two years. Whenever you feel any changes in smell and texture, it’s time to buy a new one.

Hair products are considered to be safe to use for at least three years if they are sealed and then according to their seventh amendment seal anywhere from 6 to 24 months. In any case as always if function, smell or texture change is time to renew.

Nail polish Renew it every two years.

Perfume it’s a super long lasting product it could last up to ten years or whenever there is a  change in smell and color.

Lip Products do not have specific expiration date they should last up to a year, but it could be more depending on the quality. A good way to know is time to buy a new one is to check that there are no changes in texture, color or smell. Lipsticks and lip glosses that become stickier than normal: it’s time to buy a new one.

Eyeshadows, Blushes, Powder and other powdered products don’t have a definite expiration date, but it’s a good idea to change them every couple years. Be mindful on texture, color and intensity to check if it’s time to buy new ones.

To avoid wasting product

Beauty products could be expensive and you want to get the best out of your investment. Sometimes we buy products that we end up using less than we expected and they expire even though the pack is almost full.

To avoid this I recommend to buy only one of each product, sometimes we want to have "back up" of a product we love without noticing that we might change our minds or take longer to finish them than expected. Another very useful tip is to buy travel or sample size of products that have a short lifespan or products that we are trying out for the first time.  Is always a great idea to ask for guidance when we buy a product, learning all we can about it and how to use it before we buy it, makeup and hair workshops are a great option. Be mindful of what and how you buy products so you won't be overwhelmed with products you are not sure they are right for you.
